UNC-Chapel Hill Doctoral Hooding Ceremony, May 2015

It all started when…

I was born in Columbia, SC where I was educated in public schools. I attended undergraduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where I majored in Journalism and Mass Communications and minored in African American Studies. A professor in Afam (as we Tar Heels called it in the 90s, early 2000s) inspired me to become a scholar. As a result, my adventures at my beloved alma mater began again. I completed my Ph.D. in US History from UNC-Chapel Hill in Spring 2015.

I have had the fortune of working with students and colleagues at wonderful public institutions of higher learning, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Florida, Rutgers University, and the College of Charleston. Engaging with new and old ideas, exploring the past, and sharing my knowledge and experiences with students are the things I love most about my work. My current research interests are enslaved women, sexualized violence, and the influences of rape on the Antebellum South.

When I am not researching, writing, or teaching, I enjoy time with family and friends, a good ball game, and funny memes on social media.
