What’s past is prologue
— William Shakespeare, The Tempest

Welcome. I research, write, and teach 19th Century U.S. History, African American History, and Slavery in the U.S.

I am an Associate Professor of African American History at the College of Charleston where I also serve on the executive board of the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston. I recently published my first book, Sexual Violence and American Slavery: The Making of a Rape Culture in the Antebellum South, with the University of North Carolina Press.
